Dr. Andrew Wooyoung Kim is a biological anthropologist and human biologist.
Dr. Kim is an Assistant Professor in Biological Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley and holds a PhD in anthropology from Northwestern University. He is a former postdoctoral research fellow at the Center for Global Health at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, USA. He is also an Honorary Researcher at the Department of Paediatrics at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Dr. Kim’s research integrates biological, epidemiological, and anthropological approaches to understand how social oppression becomes embodied and produces health inequities in historically marginalized communities. His current work traces the biosocial mechanisms underlining the intergenerational mental health effects of violence from apartheid in Soweto and Johannesburg, South Africa. Through a collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of the Witwatersrand and the South African Depression and Anxiety Group, he is also leading a study on the perceptions, experiences, and mental health impacts of COVID-19 in tertiary psychiatric hospitals in Johannesburg. His research is currently supported by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, and the Wenner-Gren Foundation.
